Artistic Statement
I’m deeply invested in decentering privileged identities and normative constructions of community and the Self in the name of bettering society; experimenting with using popular music styles and story structure to explain bigger ideas and controversial topics; and reimagining the way we write musicals, construct society, and embrace the muck that is making more just and equitable societies. I believe in “art as an affinity space” or art as a place for community members to see themselves without the gaze or input from oppressive entities nor people who do not see them as valid. I write stories with people of Color, queer and trans folks, and disabled communities – especially characters at the intersections of those. I believe that everyone is in the same storm, but not in the same boat, and I write for the boats that struggle to stay afloat.
